97 woman deputies at parliament

NEWS CENTER (DİHA) - Voters in Turkey sent 97 woman MPs to the Parliament in yesterday's election, making for the largest rate of women ever in Turkey's Parliament: 20%.

Perhaps the greatest winners in yesterday's election were women. The HDP will send 32, the AKP 41, the CHP 20 and the MHP 4 women to Parliament. The HDP, which runs on a principle of gender parity, is responsible for a good part of the victory. By passing the threshold, the HDP increased the number of women MPs by 32%. Meanwhile, the CHP and MHP will both send more women to Parliament than in the last election.

The AKP will send 41 women out of the 99 on its list to Parliament. Ravza Kavakçı, the sister of famous politician Merve Kavakçı who attended Parliament in her headscarf, is among the MPs, as is Leyla Şahin, who had a case opened against her for her headscarf.

The CHP will be sending 20 of its 104 women candidates to Parliament. Şafak Pavey, the party's assistant to the chair, is among those going to Parliament, as is Armenian candidate Selina Doğan. Other notable women include economist Selin Sayek Böke and Zeynep Altınok, the daughter of the poet killed in the Sivas massacre.

As for the HDP, it will be sending 32 from its 48% women list to Parliament. Women will make up 38% of the HDP's representatives in Parliament. The HDP's woman MP list is as follows: HDP General Co-chair Figen Yüksekdağ, Meral Danış Beştaş, Leyla Zana, Dirayet Taşdemir, Mizgin Irgat, Asiye Kolçak, Nursel Aydoğan, Feleknas Uca, Çağlar Demirel, Sibel Yiğitalp, Seher Akçınar Bayar, Selma Irmak, Çilem Öz, Pervin Buldan, Beyza Üstün, Filiz Kerestecioğlu, Hüda Kaya, Şafak Özanlı, Gülser Yıldırım, Enise Güneyli, Burcu Çelik, Hatice Seviptekin, Edibe Şahin, Dilek Öcalan, Leyla Güven, Yurdusev Özsökmenler, Tuğba Hazer, Saadet Becerikli, Ayşe Acar Başaran, Leyla Birlik, Aycan İrmez, Kıznaz Türkeli.
