Doctors and health workers on strike
NEWS CENTER (DİHA) - After armed attackers killed a doctor on the job, health workers across Turkey have gone on strike calling for workplace safety.
Pulmonary surgeon Dr. Kamil Furtun was working in Turkey's Samsun province when armed attackers shot and killed him. Health workers, saying they fear for their lives in a Turkey where medical professionals are constantly in danger, went on a one-day strike today.
Hospitals in Ankara, Istanbul, Izmir and Diyarbakır are expected to give a strong showing for the strike today, with many health professionals taking to the streets dressed in black.
The Turkish Medical Association and the union SES (Health and Social Services Workers Union) called the strike.
They denounced AKP policies of privatizing healthcare, reducing service levels and exploiting and silencing health professionals.
