Following the liberation of Kobanê after an epic resistance of 134 days the population of the city is increasing as residents gradually return. Officials say 1,470 families and 2,390 young people have returned to the city. After the cleansing of ISIS gangs on 26 January, the number of people returning to Kobanê is rising as each day passes. Residents who left following the launching of attacks by ISIS gangs on 15 September and took refuge in various provinces of North Kurdistan and Turkey have begun to return. Those who return are shocked at the scenes of devastation they encounter, in particular in the eastern neighbourhoods of the city. Women and children, in particular, salute YPG/YPJ fighters with victory signs, shouting “Long live the resistance of the YPG/YPJ."

Unexploded shells and mines pose a risk

The needs of the returning civilians are being catered for by logistic units set up in the city. Unexploded shells and mines in almost every street pose a serious threat, especially to children. Public security are trying to ensure no harm comes to anyone.

1,470 families have returned

Officials at the border crossing to Kobanê are recording the returnees. According to the assistance commission 1,470 families have returned since 26 January. 940 of these families have been relocated in the east of the city, 303 families to the south and 227 to the west. Officials added that 2,390 young people have also returned to the city where discussion is continuing over reconstruction.
