Turkish police attack people marching to Sur
DİYARBAKIR (DİHA) - Police forces have staged a crackdown on thousands who gathered in the main Kurdish city Diyarbakır (Amed) today for a march to the central Sur district, which is set to be followed by another to Botan region.
The demo led by DBP (Party of Democratic Regions), HDP (Peoples' Democratic Party), HDK (Peoples' Democratic Congress), DTK (Democratic Society Congress) and KJA (Free Women Congress) started in front of Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality where thousands have started to gather as of early morning hours. HDP co-chair Figen Yüksekdağ, DBP co-chair Kamuran Yüksek, HDK co-spokesperson Ertuğrul Kürkçü, DTK co-chair Selma Irmak, KJA spokesperson Ayla Akat Ata and HDP deputies also took their place in the march.
Upon an obstruction by police on the way to Şeyh Sait Square, demonstrators started to head towards Galeria area for a press statement.
Police teams here staged a crackdown on the mass without any warning in an attempt to hinder a persistently denied gathering in protest at the government and state.
Nearly 20 people have been reported detained during the police intervention.
