Men massacre 26 women in May
NEWS CENTER (DİHA) – Research shows that the number of femicides in Turkey is higher than previous tallies: 26 women and girls were killed in femicides in May.
According to Bianet's research based on news sources, men killed 26 women and girls in May. In addition, one woman's body was found (cause of death unknown). Two women are alleged to have committed suicide.
15% of the women were killed for wanting divorces, for refusing to get back together with ex-husbands or for not wanting to marry. One man killed his wife because she bought a miniskirt for her daughter. 42% of the women were killed by their husbands and another 15% by ex-husbands. All of the women were killed by relatives or men they knew. Ankara had the most femicides in May (four in one month); Istanbul came in second, with three.
Seven reports of rape and one of forced sex work reached the media in May. One third of the women were raped in their homes, one third in their workplaces and one third in other locations. In the May rape incidents, rapists' ages varied between 22 and 63; rape survivors' ages varied between 14 and 34.
27 women were wounded by male violence in May. An astonishing 30% of those were trans women. Six of the trans women attacked were assaulted by unknown men, two by customers.
May saw 31 incidents of harassment and threat against women and girls in Turkey. Most of the harassment incidents were from unknown men and 84% of them took place in the street.
Earlier reports by other groups produced lower tallies. The Socialist Women's Assemblies (SKM) counted 21 femicides in May. The platform "We Will Stop Women Homicides" counted 22.
