Thousands of women enhancing riot in Kadıköy
ISTANBUL (DİHA) – The rally for March 8, International Women's Day, has kicked off with a march in Istanbul.
The women assembled in colorful clothes outside the Kadıköy district's Numune Hospital for a march. Signs declared women's solidarity against the state's oppression of women's identity and the exploitation of women's labor. Photographs of woman heroes carried at the march included the three Kurdish activist women killed in Paris (SakineCansız, FidanDoğan and LeylaŞaylemez) and the violently raped and slain university student ÖzgecanAslan. Photographs of women who lost their lives in the Kobanê resistance, including Arîn Mîrxan, SibelBulut and Kader Ortakaya, were also held high in the march, along with PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan.
Women chanted "long live women's solidarity," "jin, jiyan, azadî" (woman, live, freedom), and "women in rebellion" as they took the streets of the city. A contingent dressed as witches bore brooms. Women arriving at the square near Kadıköy's pier danced traditional dances and ululated to the music of erbane drums. The rally has begun with speeches.
