Men kill 21 women in February

ISTANBUL (DİHA) - According to bianet’s tally, men killed at least 21 women, 1 child and 2 infants. 57 percent of perpetrators were identified as husband, ex-husband, lover or ex-lover.

According to the data based on reports in local and national newspapers and news agencies, a compilation made by bianet revealed that male violence left at least 21 women dead; 8 women raped; 7 women to forced prostitution; 34 women and teenager girls injured; 11 women and teenager girls sexually harassed. In the first two months of 2015, male violence left 47 women dead, 15 raped, 31 forced to prostitution and 24 sexually harassed.

Murder

In January, men killed 21 women, 1 child and 2 infants in 13 cities across Turkey. In addition to these killings, 3 women bodies were found but its perpetrators and their motivations (whether it is societal gender-based) are unknown. 57.14 percent of murders were committed by partners. Perpetrators were identified as follows: husband (6), religiously-wed husband (1), ex-husband (1), father (2), lover (4), attempted rapist (2), daughter’s lover (1), client (1), fiancee (1), son-in-law (1), unsorted (1). While 38 percent of murders were committed with knives, 33 percent were committed with firearms and 14.29 by strangling. Killing methods were the following: knife (8), pistol (4), rifle (3), strangling (3), cutting throat (2), driving over by a car (1). Following the incidents, 2 men committed suicide, 1 attempted to commit suicide. Murder perpetrator men were aged between 22 and 64, murder victim women were aged between 21 and 59. Murder cases were reported in the following cities: Adana, Ankara, Antalya, Denizli, Diyarbakır, İstanbul (3), İzmir (5), Kars, Kırıkkale, Kocaeli, Kütahya, Maraş (2), Mersin and Muğla. * In Isparta province, one woman murdered her religiously-wed husband, saying that she was subjected to systematic physical and sexual violence.

Rape

In February, 8 rape/rape attempt cases were reported in Turkey. Rape/rape attempt perpetrators were identified as stranger (3), friend (2), father (1), man with a refused proposal, ex-lover with a court restraint order. Rape venues were listed as apartment (2), under abduction (2), apartment (1), school (1), on the street (1). The rapists were aged between 19 to 40 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 12 to 62. Rape cases were reported in the following cities: Adana, Antalya, Aydın, Eskişehir, Hatay, Kocaeli, Samsun and Niğde. In addition to these, 7 forced prostitution cases were reported. Out of these 7 women and teenager girls, one woman was not a Turkish-national. Forced prostitution cases were reported in the following cities: Bursa, Adana (4), Eskişehir and Erzurum.

Battery/Assault

In February, men battered 34 women in 18 cities across Turkey. 82 percent of perpetrators were identified as husband, ex-husband, lover or ex-lover. Violence perpetrators were identified as husband (13), religiously-wed husband (2), ex-husband (2), lover (7), ex-lover (1), fiancee (3), thief (2), brother (1), son (1), acquaintance (1), minibus driver (1). While 66 percent of cases occurred in the form battery, 34 percent of these cases are sufficient to cause lead to death. Violence methods included battery (19), knife (9), pistol (1), rifle (2), pushing from high place (1), hitting with a baton (1), pouring boiled water (1). Out of these 34 women, 4 were abducted. 17.6 percent of women were battered for seeking a divorce. One out of these women was seeking an abortion as well. Her lover assaulted her and killed her mother. One woman were subjected to male violence despite a protection order. While violence perpetrators men were aged between 23 and 47, violence victim women were aged between 19 and 76. Battery/Assault cases were reported in the following cities: Adana (6), Aksaray, Antalya, Bolu, Bursa (3), Çankırı, Denizli, Erzurum (2), Eskişehir, Giresun, Hatay, İstanbul (3), İzmir (4), Kocaeli (2), Kütahya, Maraş, Mersin (2), Muğla and Urfa.

Harassment

In February, 11 sexual harassment cases appeared on the media across Turkey. Harassment venues were as follows: apartment (2), on the street (4), school (1), office (1), over the phone (1), on the internet (1), unspecified (1). 54 percent of perpetrators were acquaintances. Harassment perpetrators were identified as friend (1), server (1), neighbor (1), boss (1), daughter’s lover (1), stranger (6). Sexual harassment incidents were reported in the following cities: Bilecik (2), Bursa, İstanbul (2), Konya, Kütahya, Samsun (2) and Zonguldak.

Regional distribution

In February 2015, 81 cases of male violence, murder, attempted murder, harassment, sexual violence, rape and battery were reported across 34 provinces across Turkey. All incidents were distributed according to regions as follows: Marmara (23.4 percent, 19 cases), Aegean (21 percent, 17 cases), Mediterranean (28.3 percent, 23 cases), Black Sea (7.4 percent, 6 cases), Eastern-Anatolia (5 percent, 4 cases), Central Anatolia (11 percent, 9 cases) and South-Eastern Anatolia (2.4 percent, 2 cases).
