Women lay Özgecan to rest
MERSİN (DİHA) - Özgecan Aslan, who was burnt to death after being raped in Tarsus district of Mersin yesterday, has been laid to rest by women today.

The funeral of Özgecan was attended by lots of women, who carried her coffin on their shoulders. The body of Özgecan Aslan was brought to the Mersin Cemevi (Alevi place of worship) today following procedures in the hospital that proved that her body was burnt after she had been killed. Her body was then taken to the Akbelen Cemetry in Mersin where she was buried. Her funeral was attended by the co-mayor of the Akdeniz district of Mersin, Yüksel Mutlu, members of the Mersin Women’s Platform, members of the Mersin bar, representatives of NGO’s as well as her relatives.
The women at the funeral raised slogans angrily condemning the murder of women in Turkey, such as: “We will not make peace with your violence” and “Woman, Life, Freedom”. Özgecan’s father needed medical treatment and was taken to an ambulance, while her mother demanded long sentences for the murderers.
Large numbers of women are protesting the savage murder in Mersin where the Women’s Platform will hold a press conference and a protest action in the coming hours.
