İSTANBUL (DİHA) - Women in Turkey and North Kurdistan have raised strong reactions to the savage murder of a university student, Özgecan Aslan, who was burnt to death after being raped by three men in Mersin yesterday.

Women in Turkey and North Kurdistan have raised strong reactions to the savage murder of a university student, Özgecan Aslan, who was burnt to death after being raped by three men in Tarsus district of Mersin yesterday. Women started a campaign on Twitter by opening the hashtag #ÖzgecanAslan. Women politicians from HDP, including the co-chair of the party, Figen Yüksekdağ, are also supporting the action.

The extent of femicide in Turkey has once again been revealed by the murder of Özgecan Aslan, while according to official figures murders of women have increased 1,400 % during the period of AKP rule. Women shared photos on social media holding placards in protests at the savage murder of Özgecan. HDP co-chair Yüksekdağ also shared a photo holding a placard which read: “Stop the murder of women, #ÖzgecanAslan”

In the meantime, women’s organisations are preparing protest actions today in many cities. While the Platform “We will Stop the Murder of Women” will gather at 13:30 in front of the French consulate in Istanbul to march to Galatasaray Square, the feminist platform: “Group for Emergency Measures against the Murder of Women” will hold a march in Kadiköy starting at 19:00. The Adana Women’s Platform will also stage a march starting at 17:30 from 5 January Square to İnönü Park. Reports are coming through about preparations underway for more protests in many other cities of Turkey as well.
