Women in the YPJ, who have been in the vanguard of the resistance in Kobanê, are also at the front in the operations to cleanse the villages of ISIS gangs. YPJ member Nergis said: “We have defeated the mentality that sees women as slaves with our struggle. Today Kobanê is not sad, it is colourful.” She emphasised that the women’s struggle at the front would continue.

YPG/YPJ fighters who liberated Kobanê city are continuing their advance in the villages. Women are in the forefront of operations to cleanse the villages of gangs. Women fighters are taking up positions in villages that have been liberated, inspired by the victory achieved in Kobanê city.

At front

We speak to YPJ fighter Hevjin in the village of Qıran on the western front a few hours before an operation against ISIS. Hevjin says: “The enemy is only a few kilometres away, but our morale is good. We have advanced to this point and we will continue to advance.” Hevjin adds that they will liberate all their land.

‘Kobanê iro rengine’

As we move along the western front we meet Nergis, who is singing a song popular during the resistance in Kobanê city: “Kobanê iro xemgine” (Today Kobanê is sad). We speak to Nergis, who cut short treatment for a wound to return to the front, as she prepares to go to her position. She says: “We have defeated the mentality that sees women as slaves with our struggle.” Nergis emphasises that the women’s struggle will continue in the front line, saying: “Kobanê iro ne xemgine, Kobane iro rengine” (Today Kobanê is not sad, it is colourful) as she departs with determined strides towards her emplacement.
