At least 158 workers lost their lives in August

ISTANBUL (DİHA) - In Turkey in the month of August at least 158 workers died in workplace murders.

Most of those who died were working for sub-contractors on a daily rate without insurance. The 40 workers who died in the construction industry were all working for sub-contractors and paid on a daily rate. The Workers' Health and Workers' Security Assembly has announced its report on August workplace murders. According to the report, based on information in the media and reports prepared by labour and professional organisations, at least 158 workers died in the month of August. At least 1,270 workers have died in the first 8 months of 2014.

Workplace murders have occurred mainly in the agricultural, construction, haulage, energy, and municipal/general labour sectors. 135 of the employees who died in August were workers, while of the salaried employees who died, 20 were small land holders or farmers, and 3 were self-employed. According to the report, most of those who died were working for sub-contractors on a daily rate without insurance.

The 40 workers who died in the construction industry were all working for sub-contractors and paid on a daily rate. The report also provided information regarding the causes of accidents, showing that the majority of workers died as the result of traffic accidents, electric shock or crushing. 48 workers died in traffic accidents on the way to or from work in employers' vehicles. 27 workers died as the result of crushing or subsidence, 26 died of electric shock and 22 died as the result of a fall.
144 of those who died were men, 11 were women, 10 were children and 10 were foreign workers.
