Women rally for Ferinaz's freedom scream 2015-05-12 10:05:32 NEWS DESK (DİHA) - Women in five provinces in Northern Kurdistan took to the squares yesterday for Ferinaz Xosrawanî, the woman who sparked a popular uprising in Mahabad when she lost her life trying to escape a rape attempt. Congress of Free Women (KJA) women in the city of Tatvan in Bitlis province held a massive march of thousands across the city for Ferinaz, who was escaping a rape attempt by an Iranian intelligence officer in the hotel where she worked. "As Kurdish women, we have never surrendered and we never will," said Özlem Başak, Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) district co-chair. In the town of Derik, Mardin province, women of the KJA hosted a march across the city attended by Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) and Peace Mothers members. Gülseren Yüzal, speaking at the march said that as the KJA, they would always expose rapists everywhere. The KJA and the Sara Young Women's Assembly gathered for an action, calling on young women to develop their capacity for self-defense and fight back against rape. In Urfa province and in the Diyarbakır towns of Eğil and Ergani, women held pres conferences denouncing the incident. (cm/nt)
